The Golden Island International Film Festival, in partnership with Creditwest Bank, has revealed the exciting programme for the inaugural festival to be held in Cyprus.
Over the course of 7 days and nights, the festival will screen over 50 features, documentaries and shorts across 5 venues including extended Q & A’s with many guests from the films. The festival will also highlight the cinema of Cyprus with a dedicated strand as well as handing out awards for Best Short Fiction, Best Documentary and Best Newcomer within the Cyprus cinema strand.
The Festival’s other strands are ‘Environment’, ‘Human Rights’, ‘Journeys’, ‘Women’ and UK Cinema. The festival’s opening gala film has been announced to be Derviş Zaim’s much lauded ‘Balık/Fish’. The Opening Gala will take place on Thursday the 6th of November 2014 at Girne American University.
Some of the highlights of the festival include ‘Wolfskinder’, ‘Champ of the Camp’, ‘Ningen’, ‘The Empty Home’, ‘Dead Cat‘ romantic comedy directed by Stefan Georgiou and ‘Finding Family’, a documentary which tells the true-life story of Oggi Tomic, a UK based filmmaker.
Beside these highlights the programme features a variety of films covering almost the entire spectrum of emotions – from comedy to drama to true-life stories, the festival’s programming tries to reflect the entirety of human experience in its selection.
The Festival will also play host to some of the directors, actors and other crew members from the films as they share their experiences and memories with the audience. There will also be special extended Q&A hosted after the screening within the universities so that the students can learn more about the process of filmmaking.
Yesim Guzelpinar, GIFFF director, commented ‘Pulling the festival programme together has been tough given the great choices. Our aim was to reflect the multi-cultural and multi-faceted nature of the island. We’re excited by the full line-up – I’m sure that every member of the public will find something of interest.’
